Balloon Angioplasty

Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) occurs when the arteries that supply the heart muscle, called coronary arteries, become narrowed and blocked and blood flow is partially or completely interrupted. Coronary angiography is the diagnostic tool that best shows the structure of the coronary vessels. After coronary angiography, surgery or drug treatment can be decided without any procedure. Balloon angioplasty and/or stenting (steel cage) can be applied to open appropriate stenoses and blockages. Coronary Balloon Angioplasty is a treatment intervention performed in the same session or in a later session to open the narrowed or blocked vessel in patients who have decided to apply a balloon to the diseased vessel as a result of coronary angiography. Balloon dilatation is performed in the cardiology catheterization laboratory during or after the angiography procedure. It is performed immediately in patients who have had a heart attack. To do this, a 2-3 mm thick plastic tube called a catheter is inserted into the mouth of the coronary artery and a very thin wire is passed through the stenosis area. A balloon with a pre-determined diameter and length is brought over the wire to the stenosis area in the coronary artery in a deflated state. It is inflated by giving serum-dyed substance from the outside, the vessel is opened and then deflated and removed.
